Here are several articles related to triathlon training and planning for seniors that I came across over the past month. Several of these from this month’s finds should also inspire you to become and stay fit.

NUTRITION & HYDRATION

This research paper provides the following thoughts on using what we eat to support sleep. Here are three takeaways for a nutrition perspective:

  1. Tryptophan-rich foods (e.g., dairy, turkey, nuts) can increase brain serotonin and melatonin production, potentially supporting sleep onset.
  2. Carbohydrate intake facilitates tryptophan’s entry into the brain and may enhance melatonin synthesis.
  3. Other investigated compounds include valerian and supplemental melatonin, though research evidence is mixed and further study is needed.

This article highlights why osteoporosis isn’t just a women’s health issue—up to one in five men over 50 will suffer a fracture from weakened bones, yet most men aren’t screened or treated, leading to worse outcomes and loss of independence with age.

REST & RECOVERY

This scoping review—an overview that maps what researchers currently know about a topic—explores how sleep quality and sleep patterns change with age and why those changes matter for healthy aging. It shows that shorter, more fragmented sleep, as well as both too little and too much total sleep, are linked to poorer physical, cognitive, and emotional health in older adults. The authors emphasize that improving sleep may be a practical, and often overlooked, way to support healthier aging.

    Interestingly, one reason not mentioned is to qualify for triathlon at the 2027 National Senior Games in the United States.
