More Information & Inspiration (July 2024)
Here are several articles related to triathlon training and planning for seniors that I came across over the past month. Several of these from this month’s finds should also inspire you to become and stay fit.
Information
According to the author of this article, “pre-race hydration is actually a bit of a balancing act and definitely not just a battle to get as much water in as you can.” Our bodies regulate fluid levels, including where these fluids reside within the body, which makes it impossible to load up on water. Besides, nearly two-thirds of the water is inside our cells with the balance maintained by the electrolytes, primarily sodium and potassium.
The author provides practical guidance for arriving at a race properly hydrated. Since he mentions a reliance on our thirst response, remember that thirst becomes less reliable with age. Older athletes should consider other means to ensure proper hydration.
This article summarizes food-based strategies to help our brain function better. The author claims these are valid “whether that brain is 9 years old or 90.”
This podcast includes a review of the four stages of sleep and the benefits of each. The recording ends with advice for developing a sleep plan that maximizes the benefits for time-starved athletes.
Inspiration
Among this year’s 2,350 competitors in the sprint and Olympic distance triathlons are senior triathletes Randy Stone (76) and Kim Walton (60). Both have competed in this race over twenty times. Kim’s story of competing after a spinal cord injury is especially inspiring.
One statement by the games’ lead coordinator, Karen Readon, resonated with me: “Don’t stand on the sidelines. . . . Staying active physically, mentally, and socially is key to a long healthy life. Loneliness is as dangerous as smoking or obesity.” Athlete of the Year, 81-year-old Charles Cray echoed this sentiment.
